Crowds brave chilly night, long lines at Jiffy Lube Live for Obama's swing-state campaign stop just days before Tuesday's election.
A huge crowd braved long lines — some waiting as long as five hours — and a cold Saturday night to hear President Barack Obama make his case for reelection at a grassroots rally at Bristow’s Jiffy Lube Live amphitheater. The campaign stop also featured former President Bill Clinton and Virginia-native Dave Matthews. In his late-night address to the crowd, Obama cast the election as a choice between two different visions of America. “The people who need a champion are the Americans whose letters I read late at night; the men and women I meet on the campaign trail every day,” Obama said. “It’s about the kids dreaming of becoming scientists or doctors, engineers or entrepreneurs, diplomats or even a president. They need a champion because the…
The duo appeared with Dave Matthews in Bristow Saturday.
President Barack Obama, accompanied by former President Bill Clinton, campaigned three days before election day in Bristow, VA at Jiffy Lube Live. "In three days you've got a choice to make. Even if you've made the choice, you got to go talk to some folks who haven't," Obama said. "You've got to tell them it's not just a choice between two candidates or two parties, it's a choice between two different visions for America." Obama spoke on the economy, energy, jobs, reducing the deficit and maintaining homeland security, among other topics. Democrat candidate for the U.S. Senate former governor Tim Kaine was also at the event. Singer Dave Matthews also joined the campaign stop and performed an acoustic set for the crowd. Patrick Moran, son of U.S. Rep. Jim Moran, resigned from father's reelection campaign Wednesday. Police began a criminal investigation of Patrick Moran on Thursday.
ARLINGTON, Va. -- Following the release of a video this week that shows Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Moran's son, Patrick, apparently talking about ways to skirt voter identification laws, the Arlington County Police Department has opened a criminal investigation into the matter. "Every component is under investigation right now," police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck said. "It's very early." The video, released by conservative activist James O'Keefe — whose methods and productions have been called into question in the past — shows the younger Moran responding to requests for advice on how the unidentified cameraman can "vote for" 100 inactive voters. Patrick Moran, after suggesting the person's energy would be better used in more traditional — …

Patrick Moran said he resigned in an email Wednesday.
Patrick Moran, son of Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Moran, has resigned from his father's reelection campaign. "Effective immediately, I have resigned from the Moran for Congress campaign," Patrick Moran said in an email. The resignation follows the release of a near 27-minute video filmed in various locations in Arlington's Courthouse community in which the younger Moran apparently talks with someone posing as a supporter about skirting new voter identification laws. The video was released by conservative activist James O'Keefe, whose work has been discredited in the past. In it, the videographer continuously prompts the younger Moran for advice on how best to "vote for" 100 names of inactive voters from Northern Virginia to Richmond. Moran, …

'Big Bird' gets a mention, 'sequestration' doesn't in the first presidential debate between President Barack Obama and former Gov. Mitt Romney Wednesday night.
ARLINGTON — If the crowd at Busboys and Poets in Shirlington was any indication, Northern Virginia Democrats wanted President Barack Obama to go on the attack Wednesday night during the first presidential debate. What they got instead was a relatively calm commander-in-chief, one who took the occasional shot at his Republican rival, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, but not the inspirational orator whose speeches draw thousands to arenas. Even Democrats were hard-pressed to call the night a win for Obama. Most settled on calling it a tie, or even gave the night to Romney. And while many Republicans and Democrats had similar thoughts on performance, they disagreed about whether it mattered. "Obama looked really calm and didn't get …

More than 2,000 people gathered at Van Dyck Park in Fairfax to hear presidential candidate Mitt Romney speak at a campaign rally Thursday.
The economy and jobs were on the minds of thousands of voters who gathered in Van Dyck Park Thursday in Fairfax City to hear Republican presidential candidate and former Gov. Mitt Romney speak. The rally began with speeches from local small business owners and Romney supporters. The business owners told the enthusiastic crowd that they support Romney because he has proven to be a strong and successful businessman. See photos of the event here. Souny West—owner of The W Salon in Burke—said she has two sons who deserve the best. West also said that small business owners work very hard and make a lot of sacrifices and hope to continue to employ hard workers. "The only way we can guarantee [our children] have the best of the best in this …

Virginia governor delivers prime time address Tuesday night.
The "American dream" is at stake in the November presidential election, said Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell in a prime-time speech at the Republican National Convention Tuesday night. "I don't have to tell any of you: this is a tough economy. We all have friends, family and neighbors who've lost their jobs and homes," McDonnell (R) said. "Worse, they've lost their hope. And their lost hope is why we need a big change this November. This election is about restoring the American dream." Like many of the convention speeches Tuesday, McDonnell's address criticized a remark made by President Barack Obama (D) during a July campaign stop in Roanoke that Republicans say suggested business owners did not build their success on their own. "We need a …

The Florida senator campaigned with Allen at a small flower shop in Arlington on Thursday morning.
George Allen got help from one of the brightest young stars in the Republican party on Thursday morning. Florida Sen. Marco Rubio publically endorsed Allen, a former U.S. senator and governor, in the Virginia U.S. Senate race, calling it one of the most important congressional races this year. Allen will face off in the general election against former Gov. Tim Kaine for the Senate seat which will be vacated by Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.) who announced last year he will not seek re-election. Rubio's endorsement, staged at Company Flowers in North Arlington, comes just days after Allen clinched the Republican nomination in a four-way party primary with 66 percent of the vote. "It's not just for the State of Virginia that we need George Allen," …

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate answered questions in appearance at AOL's Dulles office.
U.S. Senate hopeful Tim Kaine said the federal government should chip in for the Silver Line Phase 2 — but that the commonwealth also needs to pay a bigger share than the $150 million it has promised to ensure it gets built as scheduled. "What we are seeing in Washington is an anti-investment mentality," Kaine (D) told a group at AOL's Dulles headquarters Thursday. He said he worked with the Bush and Obama administrations to get $900 million for the first phase and the next phase has centered on who pays for it. "I believe it is a project of federal significance because it links Dulles with the most important capital city in the world," he said. "But when it comes to the state being a meaningful participant, Virginia has fallen short too. …

Speaking of endorsements: Obama welcomed the Colin Powell endorsement at a rally in Richmond, Virginia. "I was proud and humbled to learn that we have Colin Powell's support in this campaign. I'm grateful to him for his lifetime of service to his country both as a soldier and as a diplomat," he told the crowd. The president earlier called Powell to thank him, White House spokesman Jay Carney told…   more ›
