Virginia One of Three 'Must Win' States in Presidential Election?

New poll out Friday puts Virginia votes in 'toss-up' status with Romney ahead of Obama 50 percent to 47 percent in Virginia.

Can Bruce Springsteen help President Obama win Virginia? The popular singer will perform in a free concert Tuesday in Charlottesville on the president's behalf. He did the same for the president last week in Ohio, considered another must-win state in the election. The fight for Virginia votes is getting more intense. With Election Day two weeks from Tuesday, Virginia is becoming one of the ground-zero states in the presidential election and the candidates are pulling out all the stops in trying to win the state come Nov. 6.  "I consider it one of the three crucial states," said Stuart Rothenberg, editor and publisher of the Rothenberg Political Report, a Washington-based newsletter, counting the others as Ohio and Colorado, the Richmond …

Northern Virginia has benefited from those jobs, but the nation has not. I have been in goverment service, in one form or another, since 1978 (military, civil service, government contractor) and have yet to see an organization that was not overstaffed or duplicative. Now, I haven't been in all of them, I grant, but no commercial business could survive with the waste and inefficiency of a …   more ›

PHOTOS: Mitt Romney Campaigns in Springfield

Republican presidential candidate spoke to veterans Thursday at the American Legion Post 176 in Springfield.

Republican U.S. presidential candidate Mitt Romney made a campaign appearance Thursday afternoon at the American Legion Post 176 in Springfield. “The first responsibility of the president of the United States is to protect the people,” said Romney. “You can’t do that with a weak, demoralized military. I will restore the strength of the military and the Department of Veterans Affairs.  I want to have a military so strong no one wants to test it.”  To read the story about his campaign stop Thursday, click here.  Did you take any pictures at the event? With the election less than two months away, President Barack Obama leads the state of Virginia by 5 points, 51 to 46, in a match-up with former Gov. Mitt Romney, according to a poll released Sunday by Public Policy Polling of Raleigh, NC. "Barack Obama continues to look like the definite favorite in Virginia," said Dean Debnam, president of Public Policy Polling, in a news release. "And it's hard to imagine a scenario where Obama would win Virginia but lose the election." The Virginians who are "most excited" about the presidential race? Women, young voters and African Americans, the poll noted in its news release. The poll also showed: The poll surveyed 1,021 likely Virginia voters from Sept. 13-16. After the Conventions: Who Will Win the 2012 Presidential Election, Obama or Romney?

Now that the Democratic and Republican delegates have officially chosen their nominees, Patch wants to know: Who are you betting on?

It's official: With President Barack Obama's acceptance speech in Charlotte Thursday night, both the Republicans and Democrats have formally chosen their nominees for the 2012 presidential election. Let the real race begin. A lot can change between now and Nov. 6: Gaffes, scandals or even major international news events could shift the dynamics of the campaign. The latest Gallup Polls show registered voters preferring Obama to Mitt Romney by just one percentage point, 47 percent to 46 percent. A USA Today/Gallup poll taken just before the party conventions found American voters think Obama is more likeable, but trust Romney more to handle the economy. Pundits have been busy for months handicapping the major-party candidates on various …

Look at how many people came out for Chick-fil-a day on August 1st. Look at how many people have seen the movie 2016:Obama's America. Look at how much money Mitt Romney made immediately after choosing Paul Ryan as his VP candidate. I think there's a big bit of news the secular media is keeping from us. They are trying to direct this campaign, not tell us the truth.   more ›

Speak Out: What Do You Think of Mitt Romney Choosing Paul Ryan for VP?

Should he have chosen McDonnell? What role could McDonnell play in a Romney administration?

Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney announced his VP choice, Congressman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, Saturday morning as he prepares for a day of campaigning across Virginia. Romney will be in Manassas this afternoon on a campaign stop. (Go to Manassas Patch for live updates starting at 4 p.m. Saturday.) Who is scheduled to stand alongside Romney today in Manassas helping him campaign? Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, who was talked about as a possible running mate for Romney. Rick Perry dropped out of the race. On Saturday morning, McDonnell …

Fairfax County Working to Remove More Than 1,000 Deceased from Voter Rolls

State Board of Elections identified more than 10,000 deceased on state's voter rolls.

When the State Board of Elections recently identified more than 10,000 deceased voters on state rolls, more than 10 percent of those were from Fairfax County, according to Cameron Quinn, the county's chief elections officer. In all, the state identified 1,038 dead voters on Fairfax County voting rolls, Quinn told Patch Thursday.  The county is continually working to remove deceased voters from the rolls, she said. Since Jan. 1, the county removed 2,812 deceased voters from the rolls, Quinn said. On a monthly or so basis, the State Board of Elections sends the county what appear to be deceased voters based on a state level match of the Virginia Department of Health’s Division of Vital Statistics’ list and the voter registration list, …

What?!?!? If I die, someone is going to take away my voting rights!!I demand an expensive task force investigation on the "Abusive voting rights infringement of voters that are "livingly-challenged". I figure what little (if any) voter fraud going on around here is less of a problem than the fact that voter turn out is still pretty pathetic even during presidential elections. Poll: Should Obama Propose Extending Tax Cuts to All?

President Obama wants to extend tax cuts only to those making less than $250,000.

As President Barack Obama prepares to visit Fairfax County, one of the wealthiest counties in the nation, on Saturday, members of Congress are debating whether to heed his call to extend a Bush-era tax cut to families making less than $250,000. Republicans want to see that cut applied to all, including families making more than $250,000. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, who represents Virginia's 7th Congressional District, said he would schedule a vote later this month to extend the cuts to all, including the wealthy. Obama has said he would veto anything that includes tax cuts for all. Former Gov. Tim Kaine, a Democrat and friend of the president, disagrees with Obama on the cut-off point. Instead of just extending the tax cuts for …

When you say "poor" do you mean the 47% of the population Romney dismissed? I love this new party line where ONLY the rich create jobs. That IS rich! Perhaps you never heard of a guy named George Romney. Living on welfare and food stamps at one point, he made some money and is now rich and employs people. You speak of opprutunity, but it seems you mean only for the rich. While the rest of us …   more ›

Is McDonnell Being Vetted by Romney Campaign?

Virginia governor tells WTOP's Mark Segraves "apparently there's some vetting going on."

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell may still be in the running for the VP slot with former Gov. Mitt Romney, the GOP presumptive nominee in the presidential race. On Tuesday morning's "Ask the Governor" program on radio station WTOP, the governor told host Mark Segraves that "apparently there's some vetting going on," by the Romney campaign. Instead of denying that he is being vetted, as he has done in the past, McDonnell said Tuesday it would be best to ask the Romney campaign. McDonnell attended a Park City, Utah retreat with Romney and other GOP leaders and donors over the weekend. Some pundits surmised Romney was sizing up potential VP choices. McDonnell is set to attend a luncheon for Romney today in D.C. Romney is scheduled to make an …
