ReplyGet the story straight. The prices have NOT changed since last year. There was no increase. They are $4. It's also NOT correct that troops keep 50 cents per box. In the GS Council for the Nation's Capital (which includes Md./Va. and parts of WVa.), troops keep at least 65 cents per box and it can be as much as 73 cents per box if they forego incentives (i.e. stuffed toys, trinkets) and if they have higher total sales. Lastly, Door to Door sales are mostly over. At this time it's mainly booths and delivery of pre-orders.

Let's see ... how has the current policy of "no gays" been ensuring that there are no children abused in scouts????? Oh yeah... there have been many cases of men (presumably straight or representing as straight under the existing policy) who have abused boys. Excluding openly gay leaders (male and famale) has not exactly been a successful way to protect children from predators. Focus on what works and stop scape goating gay people. This organization cannot afford to exclude parents who are willing to step up and lead (be they straight or gay)... leaders are desperately needed.
In Girl Scouts, there is no problem with gay or straight leaders, male or female leaders/volunteers. Men sleep in different quarters at camp. GS doesn't have any problems with it, they don't have abuse issues like Boy Scouts.
The only problem the Boy Scouts has is the fact that 2/3rds of their groups are connected to churches... many of which still preach the sinfulness of homosexuality. On the other side of the issue is the money of donors who have come to realize that discriminating against gay people is a losing position. So... it's a battle of religion vs. money... which one will win out? I very much hope that inclusiveness wins out. A part of me is ashamed to have my son involved in scouting b/c of the ban.... but I think the program has something to offer.... how long can I keep rationalizing his involvement? I hope I don't have to rationalize it much longer.
