La Madeleine to Take Place of Old Blockbuster

The bakery is slated to open in Kingstowne in 2014.

Earlier reports this summer revealed that french bakery La Madeleine has plans to expand to the Kingstowne area, but at the time a location was unknown. From comments on previous Patch coverage, some residents thought the new bakery would go into Hilltop Village Center being constructed at Beulah Street and Telegraph Road.

Adlers Art & Frame next door to the empty Blockbuster space said Thursday that management has informed them that La Madeleine has leased the space. From the looks of things, not much renovation has taken place just yet, as you can still see signs on the walls that say "New Releases."

La Madeleine has 63 locations across the U.S. and is owned by Le Duff America, a privately owned company.

Blockbuster at the Kingstowne Shopping Center closed its doors for good March 24. It was one of 300 of the 800 Blockbuster locations closed in the U.S. this year. The Kingstowne Shopping Center is owned by the Halle Companies. According to a previous article by The Washington Post, La Madeleine in Kingstowne is slated to open in 2014.
