Lee Rec Center Water Park Seeks Volunteers

Looking for volunteers age 16 and older.

If watching children of all abilities splash and play together sounds like a fun way to spend a summer day, then the Fairfax County Park Authority has a volunteer opportunity for you.

Volunteers ages 16 and older are needed at Our Special Harbor spray ground this summer. (Students may be able to fulfill their community service requirements by volunteering.)

The zero-depth entry spray ground, which is part of the Family Recreation Area at Lee District Park, is open weekends May 24 through June 29. Daily operations begin June 30 and continue through August 31.

Volunteers will monitor visitors to ensure their safety, assist in welcoming guests to the facility, and perform custodial duties. Applicants must be able to communicate and interact with people of all ages and be comfortable working in a public setting and enforcing rules.

This position requires volunteers to sit outdoors, in the sun, under an umbrella. Interested volunteers may fill out an application form at the Lee District RECenter front desk, or apply online at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/volunteer/leerec-vol.htm.

Applicants must interview for the position and complete the Park Authority’s safety training, sexual harassment, and STARS customer service training within two weeks of their start date. Volunteers will receive supplementary training in ADA issues and interacting with special needs customers. For more information, contact volunteer manager Ginny Biggs at 703-324-9113.

Our Special Harbor is a fully accessible Chesapeake Bay-themed spray ground. Fun water features include a spraying osprey nest, Chessie the sea serpent, misting sunflowers, a lighthouse, and a crab skiff. The beach is quieter with gentle bubblers and interactive water tables. A water maze and dumping crab basket provide more lively activity.

Water shoes are required for anyone on the wet pad. Specific rules are posted on the website.  Our Special Harbor is located at 6601 Telegraph Road in Franconia, Va. For information, call 703-922-9841 or visit www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/rec/leerec/lee-spraypark.htm
