Defense Wins Discovery Motion in Rose Hill Murder Trial

Including a list of evidence sent to the defense team by the prosecution

A defendant accused of murdering a Rose Hill teen won a victory in February, when a judge approved a motion allowing the defendant's legal team to inspect information related to the case.

The defendant, 15, is accused of murder Rose Hill teen Wyatt Campbell. Campbell, an 18-year-old Rose Hill resident, on Oct. 14 from stab wounds on his upper torso. It is Patch policy not to name minors accused of crimes.

On February 25, a Fairfax County Circuit Court judge upheld a discovery motion, granting the defense team access to the following information:

  • written or recorded statements or confessions made by the defendant, 
  • forensics reports, including autopsies, fingerprints, and handwriting analyses
  • any other documents intended to be introduced by the prosecution during the trial, as well as the criminal records of anyone the prosecution plans to call as a witness

On February 18, the defense team received the following information from the Commonwealth of Virginia prosecution team, according to court records:

  • CD-ROM recording of an interview with the defendant
  • CD-ROM recording of an interview with the defendant's brother
  • 2 CD-ROM recordings of interviews with Randy Taylor, a friend of Campbell's
  • 2 DVD recordings of footage from the Rose Hill 7-11, one with slowed speed
  • Campbell's autopsy report, from Nov. 18, 2010
  • An investigation report, from Nov. 27, 2010
  • NOVARIS (Northern Virginia Regional Identification System) reports from Jan. 18, 2011, including fingerprint cards for the defendant, his brother, and Wyatt Campbell; latent evidence envelopes
  • Reports from crime scene detectives
  • Inova Springfield Healthplex for the defendant
  • Property and evidence voucher, listing evidence seized by police during the investigation

The defendant's trial is scheduled for April 11.
