Virginia GOP Ditches Loyalty Pledge Plans

Pledge asked voters to commit to supporting eventual Republican nominee

The Virginia Republican Party has abandoned plans to put a loyalty pledge on its March presidential primary ballots, the Washington Post reports.

In order to cast a vote in the primary, voters would have had to sign a pledge promising to support the eventual Republican nominee for president. The Associated Press reported that the oath was criticized by some Republicans and Democrats as difficult to enforce.

Although Virginia's State Board of Elections approved the oath in December, state party chairman Pat Mullins wrote on his Facebook page Tuesday night that the party would not have the oath on the ballot.
